What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing uses crystal bowls, Tibetan "singing" bowls, tuning forks, rain sticks, chimes, gongs, etc. to elicit tones or vibrations that ease the mind and promote healing within the body.
"Each celestial body, in fact each and every atom, produces a particular sound on account of its movement, its rhythm or vibration. All these sounds and vibrations form a universal harmony in which each element, while having it's own function and character, contributes to the whole.”
— Pythagoras
The Greek mathematician and philosopher, Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570 – c. 495 BC) was the first person to prescribe music as medicine. He taught that, if utilized correctly, music could bring the faculties of the soul into harmony; compose and purify the mind; and heal the physical body.
Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul." — Pythagoras
Researchers in a 2021 study identified noise pollution as one of the leading causes of health issues worldwide. It isn't just the rumble of cars on the highway, or the roar of jet engines that contribute to this finding. Seemingly small noises, like the "ping" of smartphone notifications or the repetitive buzz of an alarm clock have been shown to increase stress levels. This increase causes cortisol (the "stress hormone") to rise, contributing to hypertension and heart disease. While we can't entirely stop the noise, Sound Healing has been beneficial in moderating its effects.
How does Sound Healing reduce stress?
Studies like the one referenced above show how noise pollution impacts our physical and mental well-being. Often, we find ourselves "stuck" in a state of stress response where we're unable to relax, contributing to higher cortisol levels. Sound healing works to still the mind's "chatter". As your mind starts to settle, your brain will gently begin focusing on each tone and vibration, without distraction. Participants tell us they begin to feel a release of tension, and a sense of ease and peace. It is in this peaceful state that the body is free to begin the intricate process of healing.
What happens during a Sound Healing session?
We encourage you to wear loose clothing and to ensure that all of your devices are silent. You'll be reclining for the duration of your sound healing session, so you'll be provided with a yoga mat, blanket, pillow, and other props to support your body. If you would prefer to be seated, just let Cathy know. Once you're completely comfortable, Cathy will guide you in a deep breathing exercise; this will help you start to relax. With your eyes closed, you'll hear the first gentle healing tones surrounding you in stillness. As your session concludes, you'll open your eyes, feeling a renewed sense of peace and well-being.
